Responsibilities
- Preoperative Preparation: Assist in preparing the operating room by setting up sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment according to the surgeon's preferences and procedure.
- Surgical Assistance: Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants during procedures, anticipating their needs to ensure a smooth workflow.
- Aseptic Technique: Maintain a sterile environment, monitoring for breaches in sterile technique and alerting the team immediately.
- Patient Safety: Ensure patient safety by correctly identifying patients, verifying surgical site, and adhering to all safety protocols.
- Instrument Care: Count sponges and instruments before and after procedures to ensure nothing is left in the surgical wound.
- Postoperative Care: Assist in the transfer of patients to the recovery room and prepare the operating suite for the next procedure.
- Documentation: Accurately complete and maintain patient charts and surgical logs as required by facility policy.
Qualifications
- Certification: Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist in Surgery (TS) from the NBTE is required.
- Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a hospital or ambulatory surgical center setting preferred.
- Licensure: Current BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certifications.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and medical staff.
- Attention to Detail: High level of precision and the ability to remain calm under pressure in fast-paced environments.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods and lift heavy equipment when necessary.
